Music and Rituals
Music is unknowingly and subconsciously intertwined into everyone’s everyday life. Not only is it part of everyday life music also signifies important days or moments. Interestingly, music is used during specific life events universally around the world. It is cool to think that most cultures will listen to music during the same ceremonies. The music and tradition will differ; however, the meaning remains the same.
As discussed in class, music has the potential to help people celebrate, unite, grieve, socialize, and, more! Music is essential during these rituals such as weddings, funerals, graduations, holidays, and religious ceremonies. These rituals and ceremonies would not be what they are without music, seemingly kind of awkward.
I often associate songs or music with a moment in time. An example of this is the song that was played during my high school graduation. Any time I hear that particular song I feel as though I have been transported back to that moment. I remember what I was wearing and the mixed emotions coursing through my body. I can recall the nervous feeling in my stomach, the sadness as a chapter of my life was ending, and the excitement as I was about to move to a new country. I remember feeling all these emotions all at once. As I sat in the grand Queen Elizabeth Theatre in downtown Vancouver I was surrounded by my classmates, family, and friends. While waiting for the graduation ceremony begin to, I remember hearing the song “I Will Remember You" by Sarah Mclachlan.
Another ritual that I have personally experienced in my life is weddings. I come from a very large European family that loves huge weddings filled with dancing and music. The weddings are typically held in a large space to allow the entire family to attend. They often last late into the night with everyone enjoying each other’s company. I especially recall one of my aunts’ weddings that took place at the Vancouver Aquarium. It was a fascinating venue to host a wedding at. As we sat and listened to speeches and ate dinner the whales would be swimming by in the background. More importantly, I remember the song that signified my aunt and (new) uncle's first dance as a married couple. They choose the song “All of Me” by John Legend. I think this is the perfect love song! I always love hearing what song a couple will choose to mark this point in one’s relationship. I think the song is a reflection of the couple’s relationship thus far and what they hope it will be in the future. I am sure for my aunt and uncle when they hear this song will forever and immediately be transported back to this moment.

Hi Bella - I liked your uncles choice for his first dance. All of Me was such a nice tune to be chosen for a wedding. I haven't yet been to many weddings, so it's nice to hear someone else's experience of witnessing a first dance.
ReplyDeleteHey Bella, I think it is cool that you associate your music with the times in your life because I also do this! I find it interesting that you come from a European family, and the weddings are huge. My family is super small so the weddings are fairly small. My favorite part of the wedding is the first song choice the newly weds choose as well!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your blog post, I as well associate music with moments within my life. I did not attend my high school graduation so It was interesting reading about all the different emotions you felt during this time and the music associated with your high school graduation.
ReplyDeleteHi Bella, I found it very interesting that yo associate music with specific events in life as that is something I am guilty of too. I also think it is cool that your High school went with a more untraditional song to walk the stage to, as I have never heard that song at any graduation I have attended.
ReplyDeleteHey Bella!! I really like the way that you took your blog. I am telling you right now that is that was the song that my school played at graduation I would have been crying, they better of had tissues. I also really like the fact that you talked about weddings, I think that the music that you play at a wedding is really important and meaningful.
ReplyDeleteI also associate music with different life events. I had never heard the first song, "I will remember you," so I found it interesting that they played it at your graduation. I think that it is cool that they chose something different that the typical.
ReplyDeleteIt is very interesting to me that you connect music with particular life experiences because I also do the same. It's also very cool to me that your school didn't play the normal/basic song to walk on graduation.
ReplyDeleteHello, it is very interesting that though we are from different countries our graduation ceremonies seem very similar. In the way of music and gathering. I also absolutely love John Legend and that song is just so sweet.
ReplyDeleteHi Bella, I find the music that you posted very interesting and I enjoyed reading about it. Thanks for sharing with us.
